My hubby may be interested in this book. He did his senior paper on Jane Austen as an English major in undergrad. Hmm maybe a Christmas gift. We always give books as gifts.

Just finished Nathan Englander's "The Ministry of Special Cases." Story of an outcast Jewish couple torn apart by the government-sanctioned "disappearance" (abduction, torture, and murder) of their only child, during the last Argentine dictatorship. Yiddish-English dictionary needed occasionally, gentle reader, for gentile readers. Englander is a wonderful writer; I found it hard to put this one down.

Have moved on to S.J. Perelman's "The Last Laugh." Mostly stuff I remember reading in the New Yorker, back in the 1970s. The second part of the tome consists of his barely-started autobiography with the topical Perelmanesque title "The Hindsight Saga." I read that first, as its beginning chapter is about the Marx Brothers. The following two chapters are about his famous brother-in-law Nathanael West and Perelman's friendship with Dorothy Parker. I find myself spending a lot of time rolling on the floor laughing, with occasional breaks to look up some of Uncle Syd's remarkable vocabulary in my unabridged.

Love the interview! The juxtapose drawing a parallel between a duck and Diana Gabaldon's "Highlander" series was a grand aphorism! " A rose by any other name, will smell as sweet."
I try not to read romance novels too often. I find that after closing the book for the last time, I am very irritated with my husband for not being that handsome, gallant, dangerous, man who comes riding home on his spirited black steed to sweep me off my feet and crush me in a passionate embrace. I will stick with historical novels.

I have just found my copy in the loft! Didn't know I still had it! I loved this as a child, and so I 'googled' it. Imagine my surprise to see how rare it was! I had re read it, for old times sake, and was going to throw it away! Needless to say, it is now on ebay until tomorrow and has already reached over £100! I really hope someone gets to enjoy it as much as I did..
